The Gummer’s How walk in England’s Lake District offers stunning views across Lake Windermere and the mountains beyond. It’s a relatively easy walk, taking just 20-30 minutes to reach the top, but you’ll be rewarded with some of the best views of Windermere and the Lake District. Located near the southern end of Lake Windermere, Gummer’s How is easily accessible thanks to a car park at the start of the trail. Despite the wonderful views, it’s not too well known and is a hidden gem in the Lake District. Gummer’s How Walk Car Park
The Gummer’s How Car Park is located to the south of Lake Windermere, just off Fell Foot Brow, at postcode LA12 8NP. It’s easy to find using Google Maps or a sat-nav, but the postcode may lead you slightly astray so make sure it’s directing you up Fell Foot Brow.
Parking at the Gummer’s How Car Park is completely free, but there are only around 20 spaces and it can get busy at times. If the car park is full then you can park in one of the lay-bys along Fell Foot Brow.
It’s around a 15-minute drive from Bowness-on-Windermere to the Gummer’s How Car Park, or around a 30-minute drive from the town of Kendal.
This part of the Lake District is easily reached from the major cities of Manchester and Liverpool by car.

Gummer’s How Walk
As you face the road from the car park, you should be able to see a walking trail on your right hand side. This path will lead you through a forest, and after a few minutes you will come to a gate on your left.
Go through the gate and then cross the road, at which point you will come to a gated public footpath. This marks the start of the Gummer’s How walk.
From this point it’s around a 20-30 minute walk to the top of Gummer’s How. The walk starts off reasonably flat, but after a while you’ll come to some stone steps which will lead you upwards.
Whilst making your way up you get some lovely views of Lake Windermere, so take the time to enjoy the scenery as you walk. Once you’ve reached the top of the stairs there is a flat section of path to your right that you need to take.
As you walk along this path there is a little bit of scrambling up, but nothing too strenuous. After a while you should come to a point where you can turn left, and this path should lead you to the top of the hill.
Once you’re at the top of Gummer’s How you’ll have an incredible view of Lake Windermere, as well as some of the Lake District’s mountains and hills in the distance. The hilltop covers quite a large area, so there are plenty of different viewpoints to enjoy. By far some of the best views we saw in the Lake District were here at Gummer’s How. Tips for visiting Gummer’s How walk
Dog Friendly – Gummer’s How is a great spot for walking dogs, especially as there is a large area at the hilltop for them to run around. During our visit we were housesitting and looking after a lovely dog, Puffin, and we had a great time throwing the ball for her to play with on top of the hill.
Hidden gem in Windermere – The short walk at Gummer’s How is a bit of a hidden gem in Windermere, as it’s a lot quieter than some of the other peaks in the area. During our visit Bowness-on-Windermere was busy with tourists, but we only saw a few other people on our walk to the top to enjoy the fantastic views.
Longer Gummer’s How walk – If you want to extend your walk further then there is a trail that leads northwards from the top of Gummer’s How, alongside Lake Windermere. By continuing on you do get some slightly different viewpoints, but the best views are from the hilltop.
