Faaker See, known in English as Lake Faak, is a stunning lake in the southern Austrian region of Carinthia. The lake is known for its beautiful turquoise water, and it’s an incredibly picturesque spot thanks to the surrounding mountains and forest. Situated just a 15-minute drive from Velden am Wörthersee, Lake Faak is the fifth-largest lake in Carinthia. The beaches at Lake Faaker See are great spots for swimming thanks to the inviting blue water and the area’s natural beauty. One of the other top things to do in the area is to visit the Taborhöhe viewpoint, which offers amazing views of the lake from above. What to do at Lake Faaker See
Lake Faaker See Beaches
One of the best things to do at Lake Faaker See is to visit one of the beaches. There are several beaches at Lake Faak, giving you the chance to swim in the lake surrounded by mountains and other beautiful scenery. The water isn’t always the warmest at Lake Faaker See, with an average temperature of 21°C during summer, but that means it’s great for cooling off on a hot day!
Facilities vary from beach to beach, but generally they have changing rooms, space for you to lay out your towels and more. Sun beds and parasols are normally available to rent for a small fee, and some beaches even have waterslides into the lake.
Our personal recommendation is Strandbad Drobollach, as the beach itself is free and you only need to pay for parking. Parking at Strandbad Drobollach costs just €1.50 per hour, which is good value as other beaches charge a set rate to enter regardless of how long you stay.
Other beaches around Lake Faaker See include Strandbad Egg Faaker See and Strandbad Walter, with prices starting from around €5 per day per adult.
Free Swimming at Lake Faak
If you don’t want to pay to access one of the beaches at Lake Faaker See then there is also a small area where it’s possible to swim in the lake for free. There is a stretch of free roadside parking on Egger Seeuferstraße, and directly opposite this you can access the lake via some rocks. Personally we think it’s worth visiting Strandbad Drobollach, even if you’re having to pay €1.50 per hour for parking. If you’re staying locally and are able to walk to Strandbad Drobollach then you can even access the beach for free!
The advantage of visiting one of the beaches instead of the free swimming area is that there is space to lay out your towel and sunbathe at the beaches.
Lake Faaker See Viewpoint
One of the best things to do at Lake Faaker See is to visit the Taborhöhe viewpoint. This viewpoint at the top of Tabor overlooks Lake Faak and allows you to appreciate the stunning blue water of the lake from above.
There are two ways to reach the Taborhöhe viewpoint at Lake Faaker See. The first option is to drive to the top, with a road leading all the way up to a small parking area just a few minutes walk from the viewpoint. Alternatively, if you want a good workout then you can hike up to the viewpoint.
However you decide to get there, the Taberhöhe viewpoint gives one of the best views of Lake Faaker See. The surrounding nature is equally impressive, with impressive mountains serving as the backdrop for your view of the lake.
Nearby to the viewpoint is Hochhinauf Waldseilpark, an adventure park in the forest offering climbing, archery, mini golf and more. There is also a small restaurant with a seating area overlooking Lake Faaker See if you fancy a snack or drink with a view!

Naturel Hoteldorf Seeleitn is another great option if you’re looking for a comfortable apartment with access to Lake Faak. If you don’t fancy swimming in the lake itself then there is also a heated swimming pool at the property, as well as a large sunbathing area.
Open from May to September each year, this family-friendly property offers free parking, a sauna, and its own restaurant serving Austrian specialties. Free pick up is also available from Faak am See train station if needed.
