La Foradada del Montsia Hike: Amazing views of Delta de L’Ebre

Last Updated on April 29, 2024 by Sam

If you’re looking for a hike with amazing views in South Catalonia, then don’t miss La Foradada del Montsia. The summit offers beautiful views of mountains, the Catalan coast and the Ebro Delta – which is why it’s on our list of the top things to do in Delta de L’Ebre! Seeing the delta from above gives you the chance to appreciate its scale from a different perspective at the La Foradada del Montsia viewpoint. The hike is most easily accessible by car due to its remote location, but it’s well worth the drive and hike to enjoy the stunning views. Find out everything you need to know with this guide to the La Foradada del Montsia hike in Catalonia.

La Foradada del Montsia Parking

It isn’t possible to reach the La Foradada del Montsia hiking trail by public transport, so the best way to get there is to drive yourself. Free parking is available at the start of the hiking route, at a spot listed on Google Maps as near Coco de Jordi. It’s a fairly small car park, so it’s best to arrive early to make sure you get a parking space – especially during the summer months!

The car park is around a 3 kilometre drive from the N340 highway, and to get there you will have to drive down a somewhat narrow single-track road. There are passing points along the way in case you do happen to meet any oncoming traffic.

As driving is the only real way to get to the start of the La Foradada del Montsia trail, it’s best to rent a car for your trip. It’s possible to rent a car in the nearby cities of Barcelona, Tarragona or Valencia, and having a car is ideal for exploring some of Catalonia’s lesser-known spots.

We personally recommend renting via the Discover Cars website as they compare prices between a number of operators to make sure you get the best deal! Click here to find amazing value rental cars on the Discover Cars website!

It’s around a 30-minute drive to the La Foradada del Montsia car park from L’Ampolla or Tortosa, and around 35 minutes from L’Ametlla de Mar. If you don’t drive or prefer not to rent a car, then the next best option is to take a taxi but it’s likely to be quite expensive – and phone signal in the area is limited so you may struggle to get a taxi back after the hike!

La Foradada del Montsia Hike

The hiking trail up La Foradada del Montsia starts from near the Coco de Jordi car park (which is currently listed as closed, down below we have linked to a trail which the car park is currently open.)

It’s around a 1½-2 hour hike from the car park to the top of La Foradada del Montsia if you’re going at a reasonable pace. If you push yourself it’s possible to do slightly quicker, and we were able to reach the top in around an hour and a quarter.

The hike isn’t overly challenging if you have a moderate level of fitness, but the majority of the path is uphill so it’s still a bit of a workout! Thankfully the path is fairly even, although it is a bit stony so it’s best to wear a good pair of walking shoes if you can.

Once you reach the viewpoint at the top of La Foradada del Montsia you will have stunning views over the beautiful Delta de L’Ebre. There is a cavelike opening which brilliantly frames the view of the Catalan coast and the delta below, making it a great spot for a picture!

Make sure to also follow the trail up to the very summit, as from here you get unobstructed views of the Ebro Delta, nearby mountains and more. We recommend sitting here for a while and enjoying the views, and it’s a great spot to sit and eat if you’ve packed lunch or some snacks!

After you’ve enjoyed the amazing views it’s around an hour walk downhill back to the car park. It’s slightly quicker on the way back as there is less uphill walking to be done!

At times on the trail the path isn’t always the most obvious, so we recommend downloading All Trails where you can follow the path better. The hike on here is longer and slightly different to the one we have described but it’s a useful guide for all things related to this hike.

Tips for the Hike

Bring plenty of water – There are no shops or cafes near to the La Foradada del Montsia hiking trail, so make sure to have enough water with you – particularly in the warmer summer months. We did the hike in early March and still needed a reasonable amount of water to stay well hydrated, so make sure you’re prepared!

Pack lunch or some snacks – Similar to the above point, there is nowhere nearby to buy any food – so make sure you’ve got something with you to keep your energy levels up.

Avoid the midday heat – It’s a good idea to avoid doing the hike in the middle of the day unless you want to make it tougher for yourself! The midday heat will make it a tougher hike, so it’s best to either have an early start or wait until mid-afternoon to do the hike – especially during summer!

Wear walking shoes – It’s a good idea to wear a decent pair of walking or hiking shoes if you can, as the path is a bit stony for the majority of the trail. If you don’t have any then you’ll be fine in trainers, but definitely avoid sandals or flip flops to be safe.
